The World officially greets the year 2000

Wealth Warning: The millennium officially begins 1 January 2001

Greenwich is the home of World Time and the start of the Universal Day.  This is where the world officially arrives at the year 2000.  Three enormous parties are planned in Greenwich and millions more people will celebrate a few miles up the River Thames in Central London.

Millennium Dome

The Millennium Dome featuring The "Millennium Experience" will be officially opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II.  This is a closed event by invitation only.

The "Millennium Experience" will be open to the public every day from 2 January until 31 December 2000. Details here

Greenwich Royal Observatory - Home of World Time

Home of the Royal Observatory where by International convention the cross-hairs on the Biddell Airy telescope define the Prime Meridian of the World and the point where Universal Time is measured; Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

On New Year’s Eve an historic event to mark the arrival of the year 2000 will take place at the official Home of Time – the grounds of the Royal Observatory Greenwich and the National Maritime Museum on the Zero MeridianTHE BRITISH GAS MILLENNIUM PARTY will celebrate the new year with a unique blend of rock, pop and classical music.

Full details and on-line booking here.

Blackheath

A huge public firework display will take place on Blackheath.  Organised by Greenwich and Lewisham councils.  Starting at around 10pm (22:00 GMT).  Details to follow.

Travel Warning

Despite new and enhanced public transport facilities you can expect huge traffic delays.  Anyone who has visited Blackheath on fireworks night in November or seen the start of the London Marathon will know that the surrounding area is completely log jammed for hours.

On this night there will be 3 enormous events and new traffic restrictions will be in place.  Everyone is welcome but please expect very, very long delays in arriving and departing Greenwich and Blackheath.  There is very limited accommodation in the area.
